    did not belong to them in the Indian Church Rd./ City Line are of the Town of West Seneca in mid August 2012. Upon

    review of home security system it was discovered that a W/M possibly teen had dumped a bicycle and stolen a bicycle belonging to another resident of the area .

at a West Seneca grocery store, two white males - one heavy set, beard, baseball cap, tan shorts and button down shirt  and the second - baseball cap, jeans and plaid button down shirt.  They appear to between the ages of early 30's to 40 YOA.  The stole over $400 in merchandise.

DARE Elementary Curriculum


In this lesson the students receive their handout notebook and also go over the rules and procedures that will be followed in the class.  The students also go over what is referred to as the DARE DECISION MAKING MODEL to help them in times of problems, challenges or opportunities to use drugs.

This lesson begins work on the potential use of tobacco.  As one of the so called Gateway Drugs, promoting the non use of tobacco is a big part of the program.  Statistics show that the longer kids wait to start using cigarettes, the greater chance that they will not use them.  In fact most studies show that if you do not use cigarettes before you reach twenty years old you will never use them at all.

This lesson continues working on the use of cigarettes.  Marihuana use is also introduced in this lesson.  Marihuana is another of the Gateway Drugs.  Students begin to talk about situations that use of either of these substances could come about in their daily lives.

Students learn about the last Gateway Drug, Alcohol.  Since Alcohol is a legal substance in our society most people do not realize how serious abuse can be.  They also do not think much about how dangerous early consumption of this drug can be on a growing child.  Students learn about the dangers of alcohol consumption, where the opportunities may present them with its use and how to avoid these situations.

This lesson shows the kids how advertisers develop their programs to show the so called good side of alcohol and cigarettes.  Students are shown the hidden meanings in these ads and what the real intent of the advertisement is.

Peer Pressure is a big part of growing up.  Most adults know that peer pressure was a big reason that they may have started to use cigarettes and or alcohol.  Students are introduced to this topic and ways to handle the situation.

This lesson called Situation Brainstorm helps the students to learn ways to avoid risky situations and safe ways to get out of these situations if they encounter them.

What do some kids do when their parents are not home.  Unfortunately some use alcohol or drugs.  This lesson deals with personal pressure situations the student may encounter that invites the use of alcohol or drugs.

This lesson ties together the whole program for the student.  Situations are presented and students search themselves for ways to handle them as they develop.  Instructors work with the students to develop good alternatives to a number of very commonplace incidents they may encounter.  Also as part of this lesson instructors may have the kids write essays on what they have learned and also Peer Counselors from the two high schools come in and talk about the various aspects of the DARE Program that they have utilized to stay substance free in their lives.  This lesson is spread over a few weeks to give the students the maximum exposure to the program as possible.

This is the graduation.  Students receive their diplomas and other materials to designate their graduation from the program.  Students that have developed essays and ideas that the instructors feel bring out the meaning of the program in a significant way are asked to present their ideas to the class and the audience.  The event is a family affair with parents, grandparents and friends invited to attend. It is a great way to end the program and show support for the students as they move toward that goal of being drug free.
